End of June Reflections

So my students have a Wikispace now as their dedicated LMS. Its going really well. For some of them it's their first adventure into the world of online learning and accessing these tools. So it has been a bumpy ride for them.
The rest are really enjoying it. I created an App to support their learning. They are able to access their main content in one place.  Its basic and simple.

It has 4 components
1. weblinks - they open this and it takes them to 2 sites. Their wikispace or their online learning. You could make it open to the my.tafe link or blackboard.
2. Documents - I only have 1 PDF theory book, it opens in their e reader or adobe PDF.
3. Youtube links - I predefined the search and it open a whole bunch of communication skills videos which they can choose to watch or not.
4. Community discussion forum. post simple messages to other users of the app.

When I published it I chose a password protected option. So its on the market, anyone can downloaded but to install you need a password. That protects the copyright of the documents that are uploaded (i think).

It was relatively easy to produce - just needed to think creatively about what you wanted it to do for you.

What I found most difficult was coming up with a creative name for it - so the title ended up being GoGoGo Study on the Go.

I need some skills in creative names I think!!!

I created an app!

Shared with #QRDroid

Its simple but will test it with the students. So far it has worked well on android and Iphone. It is also password protected so it protects the content.

Reflection on assessment

You need a picture of competence to be competant.
You need a picture of assessment success, to be successful at an assessment.I thought this was really interesting.
Really loved all the presentations today, I personally felt like I learnt so much from each single one.

Digital Equity, Accessibility, & Universal Design: What do you know about Web 2.0? | HASTAC

Digital Equity, Accessibility, & Universal Design: What do you know about Web 2.0? | HASTAC
So I am researching about Equity in Digital Content and its interesting that it still comes down to the basics race, class, gender and justice, human dignity, equality, equity. And really importantly making sure the content is culturally relevant. A really good article is http://www.edutopia.org/ensuring-technology-access-all

It has also stirred my interest about preservation and protection in the digital world
There is an emerging equity that needs to be understood and which enables all of us to potentially be a writer, creator, or film-maker. While the literature on community/citizen-created content is clear regarding the worth of this content and the need to readily access and share it, there is a deafening silence about the need to protect and preserve it. This need exists, of course, so that we can harness the ideas of 21st century creativity and inspiration for future generations to understand, and draw new learning's from.

Early April Update

Hmmm, so I have completed some entries on the My.TAFE portal.
I am still playing with ideas for my two units I need to develop.
In the mean time I have uploaded my Workshop 1 slides to slideshare for the students.

And I have played with Prezi.

I think what I am looking for is for a forum that allows me to upload content but for the students to interact also.
maybe a Wikispace?

I will try that out soon as I need to have it developed by late May.

End of March Update

So I have been madly engaged in my new role as trainer and facilitator for external "online delivery" of The Diploma of Community Services Coordination.
My biggest challenge so far is that it it not actually online learning or engagement. Its simply only online theory.
I have had huge resistance to online interaction from these students. I have set up a FB space for them to connect and only 2 from the 42 are actually using it.
It's made me review everything I have thought, on the flip side I have been supporting some of the teachers in my team to use their Ipads in the classroom, especially for capturing role play assessments. They are loving it, its working really well....

International Women's day and Kony 2012

I missed celebrating International Women's Day this year. I was soo busy all day. Go figure!
But interestingly enough, it was the day that the Kony 2012 project took over social media spaces and mainstream media here in Australia. I know facebook was just buzzing with it, it had been for a couple of days.
A friend of mine commented on how sad it was that this day had been hijacked by the project. On reflection I don't think it was.
I love love love how social media and digital content can just revolutionalise peoples perceptions to take action and raise awareness.
The Kony 2012 projects aim is to free children from slavery, war, poverty, sexual abuse and other horrendous situations. I think these two topics go hand in hand. Young girls are part of this group of "children". So if we are actively trying to free them from sexual slavery and abuse it’s my opinion that it was a perfect Project to celebrate on International Women's Day....
